Radio review – Lux – “Winchester 73” (1951) ***

A little hard to follow at times because there are so many characters – I find it easier to follow faces rather than voices – but this is still a pretty good adaptation of the famous film, a walking ad for the Winchester company. A lot of people are drooling over a new rifle, starting with James Stewart, going to bad man Steve McNally, winding up with a trader, then an Indian and some crooks. Although this is ostensibly about a rifle, it’s really about Stewart seeking revenge against McNally for something we don’t find out until the end. Universal starlet Julie Adams plays the girl. McNally gets a big laugh at the end when he says he doesn’t want to do any more Lux because he hasn’t got room in his house for all that soap.
