I loved this novel when I read it growing up. There’s something about the central characters, I think, that really strikes a chord with kids especially – you understand slow people like Lenny, and why their mates like George want to look after them. Burgess Meredith reprises his film role as George and Anthony Quinn makes a strong Lenny – but let’s be honest, it’s not a hard role to play. This is PC of me but I wish the villain didn’t have to be a spoilt slut.
