A very clever twist on the monster-amok-in-New-York genre; actually, there’s two clever twists: the whole thing is done in the form of video camera footage (at a farewell party for a friend), and there’s not just the big monster stomping around but all these little vicious monsters the big monster gives birth two. This last idea is an especially big one because it means that even when the big monster isn’t around (and you know that because of all the stomping), you’re in great danger. I also enjoyed the fact that the tape has taped over a story that happened early.
This is a very well made monster movie, with a number of exciting sequences and some impressive effects. It’s nice to see a monster film with characters who are likeable rather than tormented men seeking redemption, and where the military are doing the best job they can and it’s not all the fault of a White House cover up.
The only real debit was the acting which seemed too much from the Dawson’s Creek school of pretty metrosexuals who can talk really fast. But you do care about what happens to them, which is a big plus.
