Movie review - "The Incredible Mr Limpet" (1964) **1/2

Cheerful comedy with Don Knotts as a man who winds up as a fish and helps the navy win the war. It's directed by Arthur Lubin who did Francis and is reminiscent of those movies - mainly in that a lot of people refuse to believe they are talking to a fish, the top brass don't care, there's lots of double takes.

This is part animation - I'm surprised how little work Don Knotts has to do, it's mostly at the beginning and voice over. Indeed there's not even that much animation - there's a lot of actors talking to the voice of the fish. Lubin always knew how to make a film on the cheap!

It is overlong and slight but charming. Quite racy - Knotts is married and an old mate moves in on his wife very quickly when she thinks he's dead; a female fish Knotts hangs out with wants to drag him off to "the spawning ground" (he says no because he's married). So there's the odd sly jok in here but basically this is for kids.

It's a sweet movie though and you can see why they're always wanting to remake it.
