A cast to die for: Flora Hobson (Betsy), Boris Karloff (Uriah Heep), Hugh Williams, Cyril Ritchard and a very young Richard Burton in the lead role. His voice isn’t as deep as it would become later but it’s still effective. This adaptation concentrates on the romantic side of things – the David-Agnes-Doria triangle (Dickens’ skewering of Dora has to be one of the great paying-off-some-old-romantic-grudge works of all time). Karloff is excellent as Heep – he wasn’t always the best actor, but he hade a terrific personality and he fits into the world of Dickens like a glove.
