Burgess Meredith always looked middle aged even when young but he had great energy and that terrific raspy voice (and enough charisma to persuade Paulette Goddard to marry him); not surprisingly he came to notice in the theatre, specifically in Maxwell Anderson’s Winterset. This is also by Anderson, with Meredith as a free spirit living up in the mountains; some developers want his property so they can turn it into a quarry, and that’s about it. Actually, that’s not true – there’s also a romance with a local girl, some bank robbers, a scene where the developers are stuck on a cliff, and a visit from a female ghost. Biggest surprise was an ending where an old Indian advises Meredith to sell out – it’s not worth fighting. And the play seems to endorse this. I wasn’t wild about it but at least it was different. Maureen Stapleton co-stars.
