Radio review – Best Plays – “She Loves Me” (1952) **1/2

Apparently Burgess Meredith made his Broadway debut in this back in the early 1930s – how old is that guy? He doesn’t feature here, which is a shame since the piece could have done with his energy and voice. It’s a fish out of water comedy – a stripper goes on the run and hides out at Princeton with ensuing hijinks. (This was later filmed as How to be Very, Very Popular and was an inspiration for Sister Act.) The role of the stripper was surprisingly small – I mean it’s featured, but she doesn’t fall in love, that role is given to the Dean’s daughter, who falls for one of the guys. They also don't do much with the stripper-in-a-college concept and some of the jokes might be funnier if I was a bit more familiar with Princeton. Still, it's light and breezy fun - you could imagine it would make a good musical.
