Movie review - "Ten Canoes" (2006) ***1/2
The strengths of this film lie in its evocation of a non-Anglo Australa, an Australia where aboriginals live their lives as they have for ages. It took a while for me to adjust with the story telling - the old man who tells the story keeps interrupting it to do various jobs - but I did. It was harder to get used to Gulpilil's narrtion - there is too much of it, they could have cut it back and let the story and actors speak for themselves. The cast have genuine stage presence and skill; especially the fat honey-lover.
