Script review – “Basic Instinct” by Joe Eszterhas

Eszterhas in his memoirs makes it sound like he pretty much just tossed this off to make a truck-load of money but it’s a terrific script: a good, solid mystery, spiked up with bisexual women, and a wonderful sparring relationship between the two leads. Catherine Tremmel is one of the best characters he ever came up with: rich, beautiful, sexually omnivorous, playful, funny, lonely, smart – she means everything she says.

Detective Nick is a good creation too – he was overshadowed in the film by Catherine, but he’s definitely no passenger: recovering smoker, coke addict, alcoholic, tormented (his wife killed herself), dodgy (he basically rapes his ex girlfriend), sexually proficient (capable of giving Catherine Tremmell the “fuck of the century”). Their relationship gives this real heart (even though that sounds strange as I write it, it’s probably the best description I can come up with).

The film was faithfully adapted from the script but there are some interesting differences: lots of Rolling Stones references here while people have sex (specially their 68-71 period, eg ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ although ‘Miss You’ also pops up) – no legs crossing scene (an invention of the director)
