This sounded terrific in short hand – Dennis Quaid and the director of The Big Easy reuniting for a big screen version of the Jerry Lee Lewis story. In hindsight they were always going to be up against it telling the story of a wild hillbilly who not only marries his 13 year old cousin by smacks her around, but the director didn’t make it easy for himself by handling the whole thing like a cartoon. I get Jerry Lee is larger than life (Quaid plays him like a muppet) but everyone else is a cartoon too – whether it’s Winona Ryder (who is effective when she’s allowed to act but not when she has to pull faces), or the English journalist who loves Liberace, or even the extras. Jim McBride had a vision, that’s clear, but a dumb one.
