Goldman writes at length in his memoirs about the difficulty of adapting this novel and his analysis are spot on – there are two tremendous sequences (the murder of the President’s lover and an attempted assassination) – and killing Luther would have been a third. The story does need Luther’s death to carry it through to the end – I can understand why they kept him alive, he is the most interesting character - but it lacks a kick. It doesn't make sense Luther would taunt the baddies that he was going to get them - why not just tell what he knows? Still, it's an enjoyable read.
