Movie review – “The Chase” (1946) **

This starts off great – war vet Bob Cummings gets a job as chauffeur for gangster Steve Cochrane (excellent) and sidekick Peter Lorre, falls for Cochrane’s wife (Michelle Morgan, poor), agrees to run off with her to Havana…. Where she’s killed and Cummings finds himself blamed for her murder. That’s a really good solid story then it goes off in this weird direction where Cummings wakes up from a dream unable to remember much – it’s after he’s agreed to run off with Morgan but before he does so. Points for something a bit different but ultimately it’s hollow.

Cummings isn't bad in a non-typical part - a haunted, brooding veteran. Cochrane would have been better casting but he's really good, as is Peter Lorre (who now that I think of it could have played Cochrane's part). Morgan is bad and she has nil chemistry with Cummings.
