Movie review – "Topper” (1937) ***

Marriage was very glamorous in 30s screwball comedies – movie stars in evening wear running around going to parties, boozing, driving fast, plenty of money, having adventures. The stars here are Constance Bennett (at one point the highest paid actor in Hollywood but only really remembered for this) and Cary Grant, plus Roland Young. Strong playing helps compensate for a sometimes lacklustre story and it's done with tremendous zest.
