Movie review -Shrek 2 (2004) *** 1/2

When this came out I thought it wouldn’t do very well at the box office – after all, what is the point? Shrek and the princess got together, the donkey was happy, etc. I was also maybe hoping it would encourage Hollywood to make more original films rather than sequels. Well, I was wrong, the film was a big success, and to be fair it is well done, with lots of genuine laughs - and some emotion, too, when Shrek loses his lady. All the original performers are in good form again and Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots a worthy addition, ditto Rupert Everett’s Prince Charming and Jennifer Saunders’ Fairy Godmother. Very Gen X in its humour, with lots of 80s and early 90s songs and pop culture references galore.
