A final hit for Richard Brooks - it had a perfect star (Diane Keaton) and subject (woman murdered for having too much sex).
This was a surprise - Brooks' direction is energetic, smart, and empathetic. His script is excellent - full of nuance, humour and taste. Keaton is outstanding. Superb support from Richard Gere (fboi), William Atherton (perfect guy who is controlling), Tuesday Weld (hot mess sister), the deaf kids, William Berenger.
The film is structured around various relationships - Keaton and her dad, Keaton and her sister, Keaton and Gere, Keaton and Atherthon.
The ending is shocking, powerful, exploitative, effective.
